US Military Operation on Venezuela Raises Anxieties of Potential Danish Territory Takeover.

The recent American bombardment in the South American nation and the seizure of its leader have renewed apprehension regarding America's designs on Greenland. Followers of the ex-president's base have reportedly focused on the resource-rich island in the wake of the operations in the southern hemisphere.

Inflammatory Messages and Official Outrage

Merely hours after the initiation of the Caracas campaign, a well-known right-wing podcaster, who is married to a high-ranking White House adviser, shared a symbolic image. The graphic depicted Greenland draped with the stars and stripes, accompanied by single-word caption: "SOON."

This blatant suggestion to absorb the mineral-rich land, which is a member of the North Atlantic alliance, triggered swift and firm condemnation from Denmark's representatives.

"Denmark and the US are close allies and should continue to work together as such. US security is equally the Arctic's and Denmark’s security," stated the Copenhagen's envoy to the United States. "Our nation and the US work together to ensure security in the Arctic."

The diplomat further highlighted that the kingdom had substantially boosted its defence spending this year, allocating a substantial amount specifically for Arctic and regional defence. "And yes, we expect full respect for the territorial integrity of the our realm," he added.

Political Appointments and Strategic Goals

The situation were further complicated by the recent appointment of a Southern governor as a representative to Greenland. The appointee had openly expressed gratitude to the president, saying it was an "privilege" to work in a volunteer capacity to "make Greenland a part of the US."

Following the events in Venezuela, this representative commended the president's decisive move, connecting it to the wider "fight against narcotics."

Since assuming office, the US president has consistently unnerved European partners with his stated interest in Greenland. The island is considered vitally strategic for national security and potential resource extraction. It already hosts the northernmost US air base.

Refusing to Rule Out Military Action

In a significant television appearance, the president refused to rule out the use of armed action to acquire Greenland. This stance comes during growing great-power rivalry in the Arctic. "I don't rule it out. I don't say I'm going to do it, but I don't rule out anything... We need Greenland very badly," he stated.

He described Greenland as having a "tiny amount of people, which we’ll look after, and we’ll value them... But we need that for global security."

Mounting Tensions and Indigenous Opposition

In response to this persistent "drumbeat" of intent, Denmark's security agency took the unprecedented step last month of labelling the United States as a "security risk."

The leaders of Denmark and Greenland issued a joint and forceful statement: "We have said it very clearly before. Now we say it again... You must not take over other countries."

Public opinion in Greenland shows a complex sentiment. While a vast majority of the island's residents seek self-rule from Denmark, there is also scant desire to join the United States. The island has had the legal right to declare sovereignty for over a decade.

Analyst View: A Credible Scenario?

Military experts are increasingly reconsidering the possibility of such a action. One thinktank director focusing in military analysis conceded she had once dismissed the rhetoric but was "now not so sure."

"Logistically, it would be feasible for the US to deploy a few hundred or a few thousand soldiers inside of Greenland, and it's unclear to me which power could intervene about it," she concluded.
